Aizawl/Guwahati/Dimapur: The fatality count from Cyclone Remal's destructive force in the NE region climbed to 39 after six more deaths were reported on Wednesday.
A two-year-old girl lost her life in a landslide triggered by incessant rain that caused a guard wall collapse on the family's bamboo hut in Guwahati's Lalganesh area, while two persons died in floods in Assam's Cachar district on Wednesday.
Tapan Deka, the station master of the fire and emergency service station in Lakhra, said the girl and her mother were inside the house and when the wall collapsed, killing the child on the spot. Her mother sustained minor injuries.
Elsewhere in landslide-hit Mizoram, the body of another person was retrieved from the debris on Wednesday. Seven people are still missing and rescuers presume they are still trapped under the debris.
Altogether 28 bodies were recovered on Tuesday.
In Nagaland, a seven-year-old boy drowned in Nagaland's Laruri village under Meluri subdivision following heavy rainfall under the impact of the cyclone, while an elderly man died in Phek district's Rekizu ward when a wall collapsed on him, further contributing to the mounting death toll.
People asked to stay away from fishingUpdating on the reports of losses across the state, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said nine households at Chuchuyimlang village in Mokokchung district were severely affected by a windstorm. In Noksen subdivision of Tuensang district, 36 houses were severely damaged.
A delayed report received here said a house was completely damaged at Awotsakili village in Zunheboto district. A mudslide caused by incessant rain was reported from Kikruma village in Phek district. In Kiphire district, damage to public infrastructure and households was reported on Tuesday.
The NSDMA asked the district disaster management authorities and the line departments to be alert and vigilant as the monsoon approaches the state. Further, it urged the public to refrain from fishing and picnicking during the monsoon.
The executive engineer of electrical division, Kohima, Shiludi Longkumer, said a storm, accompanied by rainfall, caused massive damage to high tension (HT) and low-tension (LT) power lines at Tseminyu and Ghathashi in Zunheboto district affecting several feeders on Wednesday. He added that while some HT and LT lines have been restored, the power department is still carrying out repairs round-the-clock on a war-footing with limited manpower.
