Cyclone Biparjoy which made its landfall in Gujarat on Thursday has left a trail of destruction, especially in Kutch and parts of Saurashtra region.

Heavy rains lashed the entire Kutch district since Biparjoy began making landfall near Jakhau Port from 6.30pm yesterday and the process continued till 2.30 am, an official said.

According to NDRF DG Atul Karwal, two people died before Biparjoy made the landfall and no casualties were reported after the landfall.

As many as 24 animals have also died and 23 people have sustained injuries, the DG added.

Biparjoy unleashed wind speeds of up to 140 kmph and incessant rains as trees and electricity poles were uprooted. Around 5,130 electric poles collapsed in Gujarat.

The DG added that electricity supply got interrupted in about a 1,000 villages, adding, "about 500 'kutcha' or thatched houses got damaged and 800 tree fell down.

45 villages in Naliya tehsil of Kutch district plunged into darkness after electricity cables were snapped and poles got uprooted due to the cyclone, an official said.

The DG said Biparjoy is now headed towards south Rajasthan and the NDRF has deployed a team in Jalore as heavy rains may lead to a situation of flooding.

After the landfall process got over, the cyclone weakened into cyclonic storm and will weaken further into a deep depression around Friday evening.

According to NDRF, it rained heavily in Rajkot.

Multiple teams of the NDRF and state disaster response force are deployed in the affected districts to carry out the rescue and relief operations.
