NOIDA: Four people died and at least 24 others suffered injuries after a mini truck collided with a truck parked on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Greater Noida’s Dankaur around 2.30am on Monday.
The driver of the mini truck, an Eicher canter truck, lost control of the vehicle near Kishorepur village and ploughed into the other vehicle in front of it after one of its tyres burst, police said.
It was carrying around 30 people, all members of a Meerut-based marriage band — Sharma Band Party — to Faridabad after a performance in Hapur on Sunday.
Parking has been a leading cause of accidents or pileups on expressways where vehicles move at 80-120kmph. Under the Motor Vehicles Act and related regulations to prevent accidents, vehicles are prohibited to pull over or park on national highways and expressways.
A senior police officer told TOI that drivers of both vehicles fled after the
accident. Cops are yet to identify the owner of the truck and ascertain why it was parked on the expressway.
“Four men — Arjun (38), Sompal (50), Raju (35) and Rohit (40), all Meerut residents — died on the spot. The bodies were sent for autopsy, but the reports are awaited. Twenty-four others were rescued by locals and a police team from Dankaur. They were taken to GIMS hospital and were released after treatment by Monday evening,” a police officer said. No case has been registered in the case yet.
