Tahawwur Rana, an ex-Pakistani Army officer (doctor), migrated to Canada in 1997 and got Canadian citizenship in 2001. He set up an immigration business called "First World Immigration Services" in Chicago.

Rana and David Coleman, another accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, were friends from childhood as they first met while attending high school together in Pakistan.

Rana was first arrested in Chicago on October 18, 2009, for a planned attack on a Danish newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

Tahawwur Rana was subsequently indicted on multiple counts, including providing material support for the Mumbai terror attacks, the Denmark terrorism plot, and the terror organisation named Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT).

Rana, in June 2011, was found guilty of providing material support for a plot to carry out a murder in Denmark and for aiding LeT. However, he was cleared of any involvement in the conspiracy related to the Mumbai attacks.

He was sentenced in 2013 to 14 years in jail followed by five years of supervised release.

In May 2020, Rana was released on compassionate grounds but was arrested again after India's extradition request for his alleged involvement in the 26/11 attacks.

The extradition request for Rana was filed by India on June 10, 2020, with the Biden Administration supporting and approving the extradition.

Recently, a US magistrate court in California released a 48-page order on May 16, ruling that Rana should be extradited to India.
