NOIDA: Noida Authority has started a project to widen a segment of the road between Chilla border and Mahamaya Flyover to ease traffic congestion.
The officials said an additional lane will be created by merging the left sidewalk from DND Flyway Loop to Film City. This project targets a 250-metre stretch to be completed in three months at a cost of Rs 70 lakh.
Currently, the Noida Expressway has three lanes on each side, but commuters face significant congestion during peak evening hours, especially at the DND Flyway loop, when traffic from Delhi enters Noida from DND Flyway and Mayur Vihar.
This crucial route often becomes bottlenecked due to high traffic volume and occasional vehicle breakdowns.
Vijay Rawal, deputy general manager of Noida Authority, said traffic becomes unmanageable at this spot during peak evening hours. “To address this, the Authority has engaged a private agency to undertake the widening, which involves removing about two metres of the left sidewalk from the DND Flyway Loop to the Film City Flyover. This modification will create an additional lane aimed at alleviating congestion,” he said. The officials said that the project would require the removal of 17 trees to accommodate the expansion.
Congestion here has ripple effects on surrounding areas, affecting Film City and Sector 18. The location is a traffic convergence point for several busy routes, including ITO, Akshardham, Mayur Vihar, etc.
Aryan Kumar, who travels daily from Mayur Vihar to Knowledge Park, said that there is heavy traffic pressure on this stretch during peak hours in the morning and evening. “I spend nearly half an hour stuck in traffic daily. I urge the Authority to expedite the project for smooth commuting,” he said.
This road widening is seen as increasingly necessary given the delays in constructing the 5.5km Chilla Elevated Road, intended to connect Mayur Vihar with the Mahamaya Flyover. The work on this elevated road project started on January 25, 2019, but has stalled since March 2020 due to funding issues. Officials said that the project might resume shortly, following the state cabinet's approval of a revised budget of Rs 788 crore in June.
According to estimates, the DND Flyway handles nearly 300,000 vehicles daily, while the Chilla border and Kalindi Kunj each manage around 100,000 vehicles. All these vehicles converge on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, which accommodates nearly 500,000 vehicles per day.
