Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, born on September 15, 1861, was an Indian civil engineer, scholar, and statesman. He served as the Diwan of Mysore and was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955 for his contributions to public good. His pioneering engineering projects laid the foundation for modern India's infrastructure.

One of Sir Visvesvaraya's most notable projects is the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mysore. This dam, one of the largest in India, provides irrigation, drinking water, and hydroelectric power to millions, revolutionizing water management and agricultural productivity in southern India.

Visvesvaraya developed the Block System for efficient water irrigation, which allowed for controlled distribution of water to maximise crop yield. This system greatly improved agricultural productivity, especially in arid regions, and was widely adopted in India’s agricultural practices.
