The death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, just four months into her first job, is believed to have been caused by overwork. By the last count, 2 lakh Indians lost their lives to overwork in a year. Why is India still sold on the ‘hustle’?
No one likes a bad death. A messy one, with questions hanging at the end and interrupting the status quo that keeps the gilded corners of our world gleaming. And Anna Sebastian Perayil’s death was the worst of all.
She was 26, a freshly-qualified chartered accountant, clearly an overachiever, and had secured her first job at Ernst & Young (EY), one of the Big Four — an informal collective term for the world’s largest accounting and professional services firms.
