The 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi will witness a three-cornered fight in the first civic poll after reunification. The civic body will see 709 women and 640 men as contestants. Both the ruling BJP and Aam Aadmi Party have put up 250 candidates each for the elections, while the Congress has 247 aspirants and Bahujan Samaj Party, 132. There are also 384 independents in the fray.
The number of candidates is lower than in the 2017 MCD elections, when 2,800 candidates had stood for elections from the 272 wards.
The municipal polls have till now been fought mainly among BJP, Congress and AAP. Hoping to make a dent in the tally of the bigger parties, several smaller formations are fighting the civic polls this time. The Janata Dal (United), All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Swaraj India have also thrown their hat in the ring.
BJP has been in power in the civic body for the past 15 years. It won the 2007 elections when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was a unified body. The party was also victorious in the first election after the trifurcation in 2012. In 2017, BJP had won 181 seats in three corporations -- east, north and south - combined, while AAP emerged victorious on 49 and Congress on 31.
