Over 1 lakh hit as Assam flood situation remains grim

Flood situation deteriorates

Over one lakh people have been affected in Assam as the flood situation deteriorated suddenly in the last 24 hours.

780 villages affected

The first wave of floods has hit 20 districts and sub-divisions across Assam. A total of 780 villages remain flood-affected.

Facing deluge

1,19,830 people were facing deluge, of whom 48,967 are women and 17,652 children, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

West Assam worst hit

Lakhimpur district in upper Assam was worst affected till Tuesday. However, floods in lower and west Assam districts have turned more alarming from Wednesday.

"I have lost everything"

"I have lost everything. All household items have been damaged. We could not get anything out of the house," says 70-year-old Jyotish Rajbongshi from Nalbari's Moiraranga village.

Rescue operation

Army, paramilitary forces, National Disaster Response Force, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES), civil administrations and NGOs have rescued over 1,250 people by boats.

A total of 1,0591.85 hectares of crop area in various districts were facing inundation.

E​xtreme flood in Baksa

River Puthimari was facing extreme flood in Baksa district, whereas Pagladiya (Nalbari), Sankosh (Dhubri) and Beki (Barpeta) -- all in lower Assam - have been facing severe floods, the Central Water Commission (CWC) said.

Roads and bridges damaged

Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged in Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Chirang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Udalguri, Dhemaji and Majuli.

Water above danger mark

The Brahmaputra River's tributary Beki is flowing above the danger mark at three places, the ASDMA report pointed out.
