Over one lakh people have been affected in Assam as the flood situation deteriorated suddenly in the last 24 hours.

The first wave of floods has hit 20 districts and sub-divisions across Assam. A total of 780 villages remain flood-affected.

1,19,830 people were facing deluge, of whom 48,967 are women and 17,652 children, said the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Lakhimpur district in upper Assam was worst affected till Tuesday. However, floods in lower and west Assam districts have turned more alarming from Wednesday.

Army, paramilitary forces, National Disaster Response Force, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES), civil administrations and NGOs have rescued over 1,250 people by boats.

River Puthimari was facing extreme flood in Baksa district, whereas Pagladiya (Nalbari), Sankosh (Dhubri) and Beki (Barpeta) -- all in lower Assam - have been facing severe floods, the Central Water Commission (CWC) said.

Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged in Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Chirang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Udalguri, Dhemaji and Majuli.
