NEW DELHI: The Indian Union Territory (UT) of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is scheduled to vote in a single phase on May 7, with two Lok Sabha seats up for contention.
The Union Territories of Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli were merged into a single entity on January 26, 2020, following the passage of 'The Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019'.
The purpose of the merger was to streamline administration. However, despite the merger, both regions maintain separate budgets and have distinct secretaries.
The Union Territory (UT) is witnessing a contest for dominance between two major national parties, the
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress.
Also read: Dadra and Nagar Haveli Election Schedule 2024In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mohanbhai Sanjibhai Delkar, an Independent candidate, secured victory in Dadra and Nagar Haveli with 90,421 votes. In Daman and Diu, the BJP candidate Lalubhai Patel emerged victorious with 37,597 votes.
Currently, the BJP-led NDA alliance has nominated Kalaben Delkar from Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
In Daman and Diu, the BJP has put forth Lalubhai Patel as their candidate, while the Congress has fielded Ketan Dayabhai Patel.
