Here’s what makes Chorao Island unique and popular – the stunning mix of natural beauty, vibrant wildlife, traditional Goan roots and a slower pace of life. It’s the latter that we find the most intriguing about Chorao Island.
The silence here is beautiful.
The real fun, however, begins once you get off the ferry. Right at the mouth of the ferry point, is the entrance to the very famous Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named after the very important Bird Man of India – Dr. Salim Ali.
The sanctuary boasts a captivating variety of bird species, including kingfishers, eagles, herons, and so many species of migratory birds. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts from all over India and the world come to experience this avian wonderland. Here, you can observe the birds in their natural habitat and at the same time, explore and learn more about the mangroves and the backwaters. This bird sanctuary will let you have a good start to your Chorao experiences.
From here on, you will start to notice that there is practically no crowd, no traffic hold-ups, no busy streets. The roads here are quieter and the surroundings are greener as compared to other parts of Goa.

Most people visiting Goa tend to hire either a car or a scooty to go around town. If you are on a scooty, you are going to love the ride on this island. Yes, the roads are narrow, but they are also pretty isolated and quiet. But that, in no way, means that you will throw caution to the wind. Ride slowly and enjoy the scenery and the greenery, these are things that are so hard to come by these days, especially for those outstation visitors.
You will be passing through small villages on the way, and these are some of the best ways to experience the traditions and culture of the locals.

When in Chorao, take some time out to explore some more. Just an hour and a half away inland is Goa's hinterlands. Chorla Ghats is where one gets to experience the best of the Western Ghats in Goa. From Arvalem Falls and Pandava Caves to the ancient Tambdi Surla Temple and Dudhsagar Waterfalls, these jewels of the Chorla Ghats are great addition to your Chorao Island itinerary.
