Make the half-hour-long trip from the city-centre to Château de Versailles to ogle at the opulent lives of the royal family before the French Revolution in 1789. Interestingly, this is also where Queen Marie-Antoinette uttered the infamous phrase, ‘let them eat cake’. The structure was first built by King Louis XIV, before it became the royal residence. Hailed as the most sumptuously decorated palace in the world, the interiors reek of opulence with chandeliers, gilt, marble, frescoes and the exquisite and jaw-dropping Hall of Mirrors Château de Versailles.
