Selling your vehicle is a big step, but after that comes the important task of transferring its ownership smoothly to the new owner. This not only keeps everything legal but also ensures that the vehicle's registration certificate (RC) reflects the right owner. Here's how you can do it step by step.
RC Transfer of vehicles: GuideFirst, gather all the necessary documents.
You'll need the original Registration Certificate (RC) and the Purchase Invoice. Also, get Form 29 (Notice of Transfer by Seller) and Form 30 (Application for Transfer of Registration by New Owner) ready. Don't forget other documents like a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, a copy of the insurance policy, address proofs for both the buyer and seller, PAN cards of both parties, and passport-sized photographs of the buyer.

If your vehicle has a loan, you'll need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the bank. For transfers between states, there might be additional forms needed.
Next, head to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) where your vehicle is registered. Submit all your documents and pay the required fees at the RTO counter. The officials will then verify all your papers and the details of the vehicle.
However, these days the process has been simplified and can be completed easily on the government’s
Parivahan portal. Then, enter your Vehicle Registration Number and click on "Proceed." Choose the "Basic Services" option and enter the last 5 digits of your chassis number, then click on "Validate Regn_no/Chasi_no." Generate and enter the OTP correctly and proceed. Next, select "Transfer of Ownership" and fill in the required service details. Update your insurance information, review the fee panel, and proceed to pay the fee shown. You may need to upload documents if required and take an appointment if applicable. Once done, a receipt will be generated, and your application will be sent to the RTO for further processing.
Once everything checks out, the RTO will issue a new RC with the buyer's details on it. The time it takes for this process can vary depending on how busy the RTO is.
