Kapil Dev is regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders to have played cricket and the finest produced by India, the man who led India to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 1983. Said to possess one of the deadliest outswingers in the game, Kapil held the record for the most Test match wickets between 1994 and 1999. Kapil made his Test debut on the Indian tour to Pakistan in 1978 and in the third Test of the series, he hit India's fastest Test half-century off 33 balls. Kapil established himself as India's premier fast bowler when he took two 5-wicket hauls against Australia. But Kapil's finest hour came when he led India to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 1983. The highlight of the 1983 World Cup was the swashbuckling hitting of Kapil when he single-handedly won the group game against Zimbabwe in Tunbridge Wells. Coming in to bat with India tottering at 17/5, the captain smashed 16 fours and 6 sixes in his unbeaten 175 that came off 138 deliveries to power India to 266/8 in their 60 overs and later took one wicket as India won by 31 runs. In the final, Vivian Richards was going great guns when Kapil took a superb catch running backwards and the Windies never really recovered from there and lost the match by 43 runs. Kapil lifted the trophy at the Lord's balcony and this win remains India's biggest ever victory and triggered such a craze for the game in the country that many youngsters took to cricket as a profession. Wisden named Kapil as the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002.
