Two young sisters, aged 2 and 4, lost their lives on Saturday after drowning in a pond situated behind their Long Island apartment complex in New York State. According to Suffolk County police, the incident took place at approximately 3:15 pm at the Fairfield Townhouses in Holtsville.
According to the New York Post, the toddlers ventured out of their home while their mother was sleeping.
Mere minutes after a family member reported the girls missing, their bodies were found in the nearby pond.
The sisters were rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The precise duration they spent submerged in the water before being discovered remains uncertain.
Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the incident and have requested that anyone with relevant information contact their homicide tip line.
The Fairfield Townhouses, situated south of the Long Island Expressway, advertises its "expansive grounds with pond and walk path" on its website. The monthly rent for one- and two-bedroom units at the complex ranges from $2,475 to $2,900.
