Agartala: Tripura chief minister Manik Saha flagged off 16 new vehicles on Sunday as part of a statewide initiative to promote road safety and monitor traffic violations. The event marked the inauguration of a comprehensive road safety campaign.
Saha highlighted the number of vehicles in the state is steadily rising, with approximately seven lakh vehicles currently registered, including five lakh two-wheelers.
Despite the increase in vehicles, road space has remained the same, leading to growing traffic challenges.
The CM urged all drivers to strictly follow traffic rules and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. He also announced a crackdown on liquor shops located within 200 meters of national highways, ordering their closure if found violating the rule.
In the past six years, Tripura has recorded 3,660 road accidents, resulting in 1,340 fatalities and injuries to 3,734. As of now, there are 7,87,203 registered vehicles in the state, including 5,57,000 two-wheelers. CM also emphasised the need of driving at safe speeds, avoiding intoxicated driving, and refraining from using mobile phones while behind the wheel.
