Tripura endures over 18-hour power outage due to Cyclone Remal
AGARTALA: Cyclone Remal has taken a toll on the electricity supply across Tripura since Monday night following a heavy shower accompanied by a high-speed storm that resulted in interruption in the medical care in state referral hospital Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) hospital and Agartala Govt Medical College (AGMC) and other emergency services.
According to state disaster management officials, the power supply has been disrupted for more than 18 hours due to uprooted trees and large branches falling on the electricity lines.

Despite efforts by Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) to restore power on a war footing, service had not been restored in many areas, including Agartala, by Tuesday afternoon.
“Besides, a large portion of Agartala, power supply is badly affected in all the districts of Tripura. As a result, water supply in urban areas has been disrupted. None of the newspapers printed their Tuesday editions due to a prolonged power cut and services in diagnostic centres were interrupted,” officials stated.
However, there are no reports of casualties or significant property damage, aside from some roadside parked vehicles and standing crops, including vegetables, affected by falling trees. According to the IMD report, the cyclone's impact in Tripura and its adjacent areas has ended, eliminating the possibility of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms. Light to moderate rain may still occur in a few places, but the weather is expected to clear by Wednesday.
Tripura has witnessed unprecedented rainfall due to cyclone Remal and the Unakoti district recorded the highest rainfall at 252.4 mm in 24 hours, which is a record in 67 years of history. More than 200 mm rainfall has been recorded in Dhalai (248.3 mm), North Tripura (242 mm) and West Tripura (229 mm) in 24 hours. And, as a result, all the rivers are flowing above the warning mark.
