The Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency, a significant electoral battleground, is witnessing an intense political contest as it heads into the 2024 general elections. This seat, known for its vibrant political engagement, recorded a high voter turnout of 81.48% in the first phase of the elections held on April 19.
In the last general elections, the BJP's Pratima Bhoumik won the Tripura West seat with 573,532 votes, securing 51.77% of the total votes.
The INC candidate, Subal Bhowmik, garnered 267,843 votes (24.18%), while the CPI(M) candidate, Sankar Prasad Datta, received 171,826 votes (15.51%). This victory marked a significant shift in the political landscape, with the BJP breaking the CPI(M)'s long-standing dominance. Prior to the BJP's rise, the CPI(M) had a stronghold in Tripura West. In the 2014 elections, CPI(M) candidate Sankar Prasad Datta won with a commanding 62.61% of the votes, totaling 671,665 votes. The INC's Arunoday Saha received 168,179 votes (15.68%), and the AITC's Ratan Chakraborti got 117,727 votes (10.97%). The BJP, represented by Sudhindra Chandra Dasgupta, managed only 54,706 votes (5.10%).

For the 2024 elections, the BJP has fielded former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, while the Congress has nominated Ashish Kumar Saha. The CPI(M) is part of the Congress-led INDI Alliance, focusing on consolidating their voter base against the BJP's robust campaign. The BJP has emerged as a formidable force in Tripura since its historic victory in the 2018 assembly elections, which ended 25 years of Left rule. The party's decision to field Biplab Kumar Deb, despite his controversial tenure as Chief Minister, underscores its strategy to leverage his past popularity and organizational strength. Deb's departure as Chief Minister in 2022 was due to intense factionalism and discontent within the party, yet he remains a popular figure, particularly among the youth.

However, internal party dynamics and the CPI(M)-Congress alliance pose significant challenges. The BJP’s focus on reopening old political murder cases allegedly perpetrated during the Left’s regime highlights its attempt to remind voters of the violence associated with past administrations. The Congress-Left alliance, while traditionally strong in the state, is banking on regaining lost ground. Ashish Kumar Saha, the Congress candidate, has a history of political shifts, having been a part of the BJP before rejoining Congress. His candidacy is seen as a 'return to the mother ship' and aims to attract voters dissatisfied with the current administration.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's campaign efforts, including a significant public event in Agartala, reflect the Congress's strategic push to counter the BJP. The alliance focuses on attacking Deb’s administrative record, highlighting issues of unemployment, inflation, and alleged governance failures. Key issues influencing the electorate include accusations of political violence and intimidation during past CPI(M) rule and current BJP governance. Economic development, particularly addressing unemployment and inflation, is a major concern for voters. Indigenous rights, including the demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ and the preservation of tribal identities, remain crucial. Additionally, chronic water scarcity and inadequate infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, are significant issues that the electorate is concerned about.
The Tripura West Lok Sabha seat is witnessing a fiercely contested election in 2024. The BJP, leveraging Biplab Kumar Deb's candidacy and its strategic alliances, is aiming to retain its stronghold. In contrast, the Congress-Left alliance is focusing on reconnecting with the electorate through targeted campaigns and addressing critical local issues. The high voter turnout indicates a deeply engaged electorate, setting the stage for a closely watched and potentially transformative election in Tripura West.
