BATHINDA: At least five passengers, including two women, died and many others sustained injuries when a private transport company bus they were travelling in, skidded into a canal in Punjab's Muktsar district on Tuesday afternoon.
Nearly 45 passengers were travelling in the bus which was going to Kotkapura.
A number of passengers fell into the canal.
The people from nearby areas rushed to the spot and started rescue operations. The administrative officials too reached the spot and deployed divers to save the passengers.
Chief minister Bhagwant Mann condoled the death of passengers.
The bus had left Muktsar bus stand at around 1pm and had reached a narrow bridge on the road to Kotkapura at about 1.40pm when it suddenly skidded into the canal.
Muktsar deputy commissioner Ruhee Dugg and seenior superintendent of police Harmanbir Singh Gill said that so far, five bodies have been recovered. The divers are trying to save people as rescue operations are on in full swing.
