CHENNAI: The Jal Jeevan Mission sponsored by the Centre and the state government has enabled provision of tap water connections to 78 lakh additional rural households in
Tamil Nadu since its launch in August 2019. In addition to the existing connections at the launch of the mission, the number of households having tap water connections surpassed one crore as on January 30.
Responding to a query by AIADMK MP R Dharmar, Union minister of state for jal shakti Rajeev Chandrasekhar said significant progress had been made in the country towards enhancing access to tap water since the launch of the mission.
“As on January 30, out of 11,560 villages in Tamil Nadu have been reported as Har Ghar Jal (Water in Every House),” the minister said. He, however, could not share the details of tap connections provided to backward villages since they were not maintained centrally.
Tamil Nadu has achieved 80% and still to cover 25 lakh households to complete the programme. As per the data provided by the ministry, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Ranipet, Vellore, Coimbatore, Theni and Tiruvallur districts have achieved 100% realisation of tap water connections in rural areas. Districts like the Nilgiris, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai, Chengalpet are close to achieving 100%. Work is yet to pick up pace in Ramanathapuram (26%), Nagapattinam (35%) and Dharmapuri (47%) districts.
At the national level, the Union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu,
Puducherry and states like Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab have achieved 100% tap connections to rural households, the ministry said.
Chandrasekhar said that of the 19.26 crore rural households in the country, approximately 14.2 crore are reported to have tap water supply in their homes. It constitutes 73.71%. Only 3.23 crore rural households were reported to have connections at the start of the mission, and the states have reported that around 10.96 crore additional households have been provided with connections under JJM.
