The main reasons cited for the water crisis were the constant bursting of drinking water pipes due to the ongoing NH works and the failure to rectify the damages promptly.
Drinking water shortage is severe in Purakkad, some areas in Ambalappuzha South and Alappuzha municipality.
Salam alleged that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials and the construction company have not taken responsibility for the issue.
He also accused the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) officials of criminal negligence in addressing the problem.
Following the strike, district collector Alex Varghese convened a meeting with KWA officials and representatives of the NH construction company.
It was decided that more teams would be deployed to resolve the drinking water issue.
