Other neighbours spoke about her love for animals — she cared for strays and fed and rescued them. “She was also very fond of gardening. Whenever she came home on leave, some of us would consult her on medical issues and she readily helped,” said Kakoli Ghosh, a neighbour.
Parents, friends, and teachers all described her as a fighter. The 31-year-old PG trainee, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital, had aspirations of becoming a gold medalist doctor, paying off her family's debts, and improving the lives of her parents, who worked long hours at a tailoring shop to support her education. Her journey from the bustling Kolkata suburb of Sodepur to RG Kar was filled with determination and hard work.
"We are a poor family, and we raised her through many hardships. She worked tirelessly to become a doctor. All our dreams were shattered in a single night," her 67-year-old father shared.
Like many Bengali families, they were eagerly awaiting Durga Puja in October. This festival had taken on special significance since their daughter began organizing a Puja at home in 2021. "This would have been the third year of our home Puja, and she had plans to make it bigger this time, as she was set to complete her PG," her mother recalled. "Now, all we seek are arrests and proper punishment for those responsible. Only that can bring peace to her soul."

The crime scene, and the possibility of evidence tampering, have been hot topics of discussion, particularly during a Calcutta High Court hearing on Friday. This followed an incident where vandals attacked the hospital on the night of August 14-15.
While Kolkata Police have insisted that the crime scene was well-secured, the victim’s family has raised doubts, suggesting that the seminar room might not have been the actual location of the crime.
West Bengal government has revoked the transfer of 42 doctors 24 hours after it issued the order. Sources said the recall order followed an intervention of chief minister Mamata Banerjee. There were allegations that the transfers were targeted at faculty members who protested the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at a state-run hospital.

The mob vandalism at the emergency unit of the R G Kar Medical College has prompted the hospital administration to start emergency services from the ground floor of the trauma care building. Equipment, monitors, medicine supply and other supporting amenities have been set up newly to keep up emergency services.
The vandalism that went uninterrupted for close to 40 minutes in the intervening night between Wednesday and Thursday has left the emergency unit in tatters. In addition to damage to hospital property worth a few crores, it had posed a threat to emergency patient care.
“We are yet to evaluate the amount of damage. Our first priority was to set up an emergency unit immediately. Now the service is being run from the trauma care building,” said a hospital administrator.
A state-of-art laboratory, 12 hybrid critical care unit beds, nine HDU beds, ventilators, emergency medical store rooms, oxygen kiosks, patient monitoring devices like cardiopulmonary resuscitation machines and ECG devices, CT scan and X-ray machines have been damaged. All the LAN networking systems, telephone networks and even CCTVs were vandalized. The mob did not even spare police barracks and nurse’s changing room.
