KOZHIKODE: The functioning of National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT-C) was hit following the blockade staged by students against the introduction of night curfew regulations on the campus.
The protests, which began on Thursday midnight, continued on Friday with the students blockading all the gates into the campus.
Rajya Sabha MP Elamaram Kareem held talks with NIT-C authorities in the evening.
Kareem said authorities have assured that they would put on hold the new night curfew regulations and further action would be taken only after talks with students.
Staff and faculty were not able to enter the campus due to the blockade following which the classes and functioning of the offices were hit.
The students continued the protests till 2pm, which was temporarily called off with authorities expressing readiness for talks. However, with the talks failing to yield any results, students restarted the agitation in the afternoon.
Kozhikode MP M K Raghavan held talks with NIT-C director in the evening.
As per the letter issued by dean of students' welfare on Wednesday, all the students have been asked to be back in their rooms latest by midnight. Also, late-night canteens have been asked to be closed by 11pm. The institute has also issued a warning that violators will be suspended from hostels if found to be violating the regulation.
Meanwhile, students said imposition of night curfew would affect academic activities on campus as libraries have been functioning round-the-clock. Also, as the internet connectivity at the hostels is weak, students have been accessing internet at library, central computing centre, software systems lab, etc during night.
