Mangaluru: The forest department will hold a public hearing regarding the felling of 99 trees in connection with the road expansion on National Highway 66 from KPT to Nanthoor. A release said National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has submitted a request to cut 99 trees in connection with the road expansion work within the Mangalore City Corporation limits, specifically in the areas of Kadri B and Maroli villages, in the section from Chainage 1+900 to 2.500, covering an area of 0.35km.

As per the Karnataka Forest Conservation Act, when more than 50 trees need to be cut, a public hearing must be conducted to gather public opinions before proceeding with further actions. Therefore, a public hearing has been scheduled on Sept 2 at 11am at the Office of the Range Forest Officer, Hoigebazar, Mangaluru. Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting in person and present their views, stated Mangaluru sub-division tree officer and assistant conservator of forest.
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta had directed NHAI officials to expedite the proposals for constructing vehicle overpasses (VOP) at Nanthoor and KPT Junctions on NH 66 in the city at a meeting held recently. The MP said the NHAI should have a proper mechanism while implementing the projects. A concrete solution should be found to ease traffic congestions in the city by constructing VOPs at the earliest, he said. TNN
