Trichy: Capitalising on the soaring demand for additional air connectivity between Trichy and middle east countries, a new flight service connecting Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Trichy International Airport was launched from Sunday.
Indigo, which is operating the flight service, made its maiden touchdown at the Trichy International Airport to a traditional water cannon welcome.
The flight landed at 6.40am with 173 passengers. In return, the return service took off with 186 passengers, filling the full capacity of the aircraft. The services will be operated on four days a week - Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, Airports Authority of India (AAI) sources said.
The flight (6E1493) will depart from Trichy airport at 7.30am and land Abu Dhabi at 10am. In return, the flight (6E1494) will depart Abu Dhabi at 12.55am and reach Trichy by 6.30am. Though Air India Express has been already operating three services per week in the route, there has been a demand for additional flights on the sector as many NRIs from the central districts are employed in the UAE. With this new service, Trichy has seven services to Abu Dhabi per week.
The new service is expected to boost international traffic at the airport, which already caters to 13 lakh passengers per year.
