Vijayawada: Transportation services between Hyderabad and Vijayawada resumed on Monday night after more than a day of halting due to severe flooding at Ithavaram near Nandigama. The Munneru river overflow had paralysed connectivity in the region from Sunday.
The state is currently grappling with the aftermath of relentless rainfall, with Vijayawada and Guntur among the worst-hit regions.
Numerous localities in these cities are submerged, compounding the challenges faced by residents amid the ongoing floods.
Nandigama ACP Ravi Kiran said that as the Munneru flood receded, vehicles are being allowed to and from Vijawada near Ithavaram.
“By late Monday night, complete transportation will be allowed,” he added
K M Maheshwara Raju, NTR district rural DCP, told TOI that in Jaggayyapeta mandal of NTR district, Garikapadu Paleti bridge on the national highway has suffered significant damages. One side of the bridge collapsed due to the force of the Paleru stream, eroding the road. GMR representatives have inspected the site by halting vehicle movements towards Hyderabad on the other side to assess the stability of the bridge. Police have been deployed to ensure security at the location. Authorities are working to restore the damaged bridge on the Vijayawada-bound route. Moreover, efforts are underway to complete repair works within the next two days.
Floodwaters are gradually receding near Munneru in the NTR district. The Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway, a critical artery for transportation, has remained closed since Sunday afternoon.
