Vijayawada: Even as the state govt has sent helicopters and drones for essential supplies to the people stranded in the Budameru flood, several victims suffered without food and water for 48 hours. The rescue teams also could not reach many of them, leaving them in the lurch.
B Nagamani from Kandrika was seen walking along the inner ring road with her buffalo and its days-old calf.
She explained her ordeal, saying that her house was completely inundated, and they went up onto the roof. The milking buffalo was taken to a nearby place which is slightly on higher ground, and she took the calf along with her to the rooftop and waited with hope of getting rescued.
As no one appeared for 48 hours and the flood water slightly receded, she, along with her son and buffalo, came out of the water on her own and with a great deal of difficulty managed to hit the inner ring road. Nagamani said that her priority is to feed her buffalo, which is her only source of income. She was on the way to Machilipatnam to her mother.
The poor and rich, caste and creed, and the religious lines blurred with nature’s fury. Everyone suffered equally and fought for life. Katakam Venkatesh, a software employee working from home, also had a similar ordeal as that of Nagamani. He was with his wife and two kids aged 3 and 7.
Venkatesh said that flood water completely inundated their apartment till the first floor, which is more than 12 ft. He was supposed to go shopping on Sunday to buy essentials and was very low on reserves. But the downpour on Saturday, followed by the flood and inundation on Sunday, left him completely unprepared for the worst nightmare of his life.
