Apple announced a new mode for AirPods Pro 2 models during the iPhone 16 launch event earlier this week. At the event, Apple announced that its most expensive earbuds could be used as a hearing aid with a software update which was pending approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The public health agency has now approved the software update that will enable the earbuds to work as a hearing aid device.
This update will add the “Hearing Aid Feature” to the Airpods Pro which will make it “the first over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid software device.” This device will allow the earbuds to work as a hearing aid for users with hearing loss.
What the FDA said
In a statement, FDA’s Michelle Tarver said: “Marketing authorisation of an over-the-counter hearing aid software on a widely used consumer audio product is another step that advances the availability, accessibility and acceptability of hearing support for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.”
In 2022, the health agency allowed the sale of hearing aids without a prescription in the US. This has led to a new industry of hearing devices that are easier to get.
Other features coming to AirPods Pro 2
As a part of iOS 18, Apple announced multiple other features for the AirPods Pro 2. Recently, Apple rolled out a firmware update for AirPods Pro 2 models ahead of launching the iOS 18 update, which is set to launch on September 16.
Apple will now allow AirPods Pro 2 users to control Siri with head gestures like shaking or nodding. For example, users can shake their heads to decline a call or nod to answer it. They can also use Siri to respond to messages, calls, and notifications.
AirPods Pro 2 now also has Voice Isolation to reduce background noise, making it easier for others to hear users during calls. There's also a new Personalized Spatial Audio feature for gaming. Game developers can use this to create a more immersive audio experience.
AirPods software updates are usually installed automatically when the AirPods are in their charging case and connected to an iOS device or Mac. However, users can't manually update the firmware update.
