Hamster Kombat, a popular game on Telegram, is making headlines with its announcement of an unprecedented token airdrop set to benefit 131 million users. While this is poised to be one of the largest token distributions in history, the event has faced significant backlash from players. Many users are expressing dissatisfaction with the token allocation, claiming that their efforts were not adequately rewarded.
Hamster Kombat airdrop reaching 131 million users
On September 26, 2024, Hamster Kombat is set to distribute tokens to 131 million users in an event that follows the game's rapid growth since March, which saw its user base swell to 300 million. The airdrop will release 60% of the game's total market cap (equivalent to 60 billion HMSTR tokens) to players following the conclusion of Season 1.
However, the distribution process is more complicated than it seems. Only 11.25% of the tokens allocated to players for Season 1 will be released initially, with the remaining tokens subject to a 10-month vesting period. Furthermore, Season 2 will see an additional 15% of the total token supply distributed, bringing the total airdropped supply to 75%.
Hamster Kombat Season 1 vesting period and token supply concerns
While the airdrop is substantial, not all users will have immediate access to their tokens. The vesting period attached to 11.25% of the Season 1 rewards has left many players feeling frustrated, especially those who expected a more immediate benefit from their involvement. Additionally, the recent increase in HMSTR's total supply—from 10 billion to 100 billion tokens—has raised concerns about token dilution, with some fearing that the overall value of the tokens will decrease as more are issued.
Controversy surrounding the Hamster Kombat token allocation
A significant point of contention is the perceived unfairness in the token allocation process. Players have criticised the system for placing disproportionate weight on referrals compared to other in-game tasks. As a result, many long-term players feel they have been under-rewarded for their efforts.
The dissatisfaction reached a boiling point when users took to social media, with one participant calling it “one of the worst airdrops in crypto history.” The backlash intensified as many players reported receiving the equivalent of only a few dollars in tokens, despite months of gameplay. These frustrations are compounded by the game’s anti-cheating measures, which led to 2.3 million users (less than 2% of the player base) being banned from receiving their airdrop rewards after being awarded the “Cheating is Bad” penalty.
Community reactions and future predictions
Many within the Hamster Kombat community predict a challenging future for the game in the wake of the airdrop. Players have voiced their disappointment not just in the token allocation but also in the overall handling of rewards, leading to fears of a mass exodus following the airdrop.
Several players foresee a bleak outlook for the game’s token value post-airdrop. They argue that the combination of a large token supply, a lengthy vesting period, and low reward amounts will make it difficult for the token to maintain its value, potentially undermining the overall success of Hamster Kombat.
