Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) resigned on September 17, 2024 as the chief minister of Delhi. Out on bail in excise policy case, he stepped down from the post and said he would assume office only after people of Delhi give verdict on his honesty and vote him the CM again. He had previously won the election in December 2013 and stayed as the chief minister for 49 days before stepping down due the lack of support from other political parties in passing the anti-corruption legislation.

In 2011, Kejriwal joined several activists such as Kiran Bedi and Anna Hazare to form the India Against Corruption (IAC) group demanding the Jan-Lokapal bill be passed to battle corruption. Kejriwal and other activists were arrested for defying a police directive and charged with causing public unrest but were later released. Kejriwal led AAP to win 67 of the 70 constituencies in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, leaving the Bhartiya Janata Party with three seats and the Congress with none. Since then his party has passed the Jan Lokpal Bill, though with some differences.

He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and worked in the Internal Revenue Service as a joint commissioner in the Income Tax Department, before becoming the Chief Minister of Delhi.

Arvind Kejriwal was re-elected as the Chief Minister of Delhi after the Assembly Elections 2020.

Arvind Kejriwal led his Aam Aadmi Party to a historic victory in the last Punjab assembly elections where the party decimated the Congress and formed its first government in the state. The party also won seats in the Goa assembly.

The AAP is also a part of the opposition alliance which has been named INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) which has been formed to counter the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
