Boko Haram

Boko Haram is an Islamic terror group operating primarily in northeastern Nigeria, with branches extending to Northern Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The group is widely criticised for mass human rights violation, abductions and suicide bombings. Founded in 2002, its radical motives led to an insurgency in Nigeria killing nearly 700 people in 2009. Since then they have killed about 20,000 people and displaced more than 2.3 million from their homes. Global Terrorism Index ranked Boko Haram as the deadliest terror group in 2015.

Boko Haram is most infamously known for the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok, Nigeria, in April 2014 which focused global attention towards them. The group declared allegiance to Islamic State in March 2015. The name Boko Haram usually translates to ‘Western education is forbidden’. The main motive of the terror group was to end the influence of the 'Western culture and their secular teachings' in Nigeria and surrounding countries.
