Google is a California headquartered, American multinational corporation that specialises in internet related products and services. It began in 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were PhD students at Stanford University. They had built a search engine (initially called BackRub) that used links to determine the importance of individual web pages.
Google has witnessed rapid growth since its inception and seen a chain of acquisitions and partnerships. Apart from the widely used search tool and Gmail which was launched in 2004, Google has to its credit a number of other products like advertising services, communication and publishing tools, development tools, map-related products and statistical tools.Some of the major acquisitions of Google were Keyhole in 2004, Android ($50 million) in 2005, YouTube ($1.65billion) in 2006.

Some of the most popular Google-owned brands are YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Glass, Android and Nexus. Google Inc. reported consolidated revenues of $15.42 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2014, an increase of 19% compared to the first quarter of 2013.
