People's Liberation Army

People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the armed forces of the country of China and Communist Party of China (CPC). This army is one of the largest military forces in the world and traces its roots to the 1927 Nanchang Uprising of the communists against the Nationalists.

Initially called the Red Army, it grew under Mao Zedong and Zhu De from 5,000 troops in 1929 to 200,000 in 1933. After World War II the communist forces, renamed the People’s Liberation Army, defeated the Nationalists, making possible the formation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

According to a defence white paper titled 'China's Military Strategy', published in 2015, the PLA boasts of around 7,000 tanks with 1.6 million active troops. Self-propelled artillery include weapons like howitzers, which can be mounted on motorised vehicles. China has 1,710 of them — about six times the number that India possesses.

While China possess 1,271 fighter aircrafts, India lags behind with just 676.
