United Nations Security Council

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six organs of United Nations, a group of 193 countries formed in October 1945 to ensure greater co-operation among countries at a global level. The Council was established soon after the end of World War II after a previous such group, the League of Nations, failed to achieve the objectives of its charter.

The UNSC charter seeks to promote harmonious relationships among the member nations by maintaining international peace and security. The Council is also tasked with investigating the issues that threaten international peace and can expel and even isolate a country at fault. It conducts peacekeeping operations around the world in a bid to resolve disputes among countries. India, as a UN member, sent its peace keeping force IPKF in Sri Lanka in 1987 to end the Civil War that engulfed the island nation.

The Security Council consists of 15 members among which five are permanent and 10 are non-permanent that serves for a term of two years. The five permanent members of the UNSC are United States of America, Russia, People’s Republic of China, United Kingdom and France. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after coming to power in 2014, has taken the initiative of enlisting India as a permanent member of the UNSC.
