Banwarilal Purohit

Banwarilal Purohit is a veteran Indian politician from Vidarbha district of Maharashtra. He was appointed as the Governor and Administrator of Chandigarh by the President of India on August 31, 2021.

Currently, Purohit is the managing editor of an English daily named Hitavada, which was founded by Gopal Krishna Gokhale in 1911.

He ventured into politics in 1977 and was elected into the Maharashtra Assembly on a Congress ticket in 1979 and 1980. He was elected twice from Congress, in 1984 and 1989, was once from BJP, in 1996. He was expelled from Congress after he took part in kar seva in Ayodhya in 1991, when he was still a member of the party.

Purohit left BJP as well in 1999 after being a part of it for eight years. He made his comeback to the Congress party and unsuccessfully contested for Lok Sabha seat from Ramtek in 1999. He went on to launch his own party Vidarba Rajya Party and contested Lok Sabha elections from Nagpur. In 2009, he again contested elections for BJP from Nagpur district but lost it.
