Rahul Gandhi is the son of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

After constant pressure from the party members, and chief proposers Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul on December 04, 2017 filed his nomination papers for the post of Congress president. With this he put an end to the two-year long speculations in the party circles about his impending elevation.

After 19 years of service, party president Sonia made way for the new President, her son Rahul Gandhi on December 11. The party, through an internal election process —comprising of 9,000 party delegates from different blocks of India —endorsed Rahul Gandhi as the party president.

Prior to this Rahul was the Vice-President and Chairperson of the National Students Union of India as well as Indian Youth Congress. He is a trustee of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust.

After completing his education under a pseudonym in abroad, Rahul entered politics in 2004 won back Rajiv Gandhi's old Lok Sabha seat of Amethi.

Rahul led the party in the 2014 general elections, wherein the party suffered really bad electoral results, winning just 44 seats as compared to 206 seats it won in 2009 general election.

Bharat Jodo Yatra

On September 7, 2022, Rahul Gandhi started Bharat Jodo Yatra, literally a ‘unite India march’ under which he will cover 3,500 km in close to five months across 12 States and two Union Territories to reach Kashmir. The campaign was seen as an effort to rejuvenate the Congress party and to strengthen its position ahead of the assembly elections in several states and the 2024 general elections. The main focus of the yatra is to unite the nation and to bring the people of India together.

Ever since Rahul embarked on the mega 12-state yatra, the Congress witnessed electoral successes in two key states of Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka. The Congress managed to wrest both the states from the ruling BJP, with several party leaders crediting the yatra for playing a big role in the grand old party's success.

Conviction and Disqualification

On March 23, 2023 Rahul Gandhi received a two-year imprisonment sentence from a court in Surat, Gujarat, after being convicted of defamation for his comment against Narendra Mondi during the General Election 2019 campaign. On the next day of his conviction, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha.

However, later, the conviction was stayed by the Supreme Court, paving the way for his return to the Lok Sabha.

Though Mallikarjun Kharge is the current president of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi is still seen as the party's most prominent face and the top election draw for the Congress. He is expected to spearhead the party's campaign and embark on yatra similar to the Bharat Jodo March in the run up to the crucial Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
