US election

The electoral process to choose the successor of US President Barack Obama was held in the month of November, 2016. American businessman and television personality Donald Trump, a nominee of the Republican Party, beat his rival candidate and Democrat Hillary Clinton to emerge victorious in the electoral battle. Panama Papers

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), a non-profit group based in the US published documents related to offshore assets of many public figures and organisation in March. It mainly contained internal documents from the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca, one of the largest creators of Shell companies. Some of the names to have got leaked in the panama papers were Amitabh Bachchan, David Cameron.

Orlando night club shooting

A gunman opened fire at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida, in June. 49 people were killed and 53 were injured in the shooting making it the deadliest attack mass shooting incident in the US. The shooter, identified as Omar Mateen, was shot dead by the police. (Reuters photo)

ISIS

The Islamic State or Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is a terrorist group which gained recognition when it captured parts of Syria and Iraq in 2014. ISIS wants a state, which is governed in accordance with Islamic law or ‘caliphate’. (Reuters photo)

Brazil plane crash

The British Aerospace 146 plane carrying the first division Chapecoense football team crashed in Colombia killing 71 passengers on board. The flight took off from Bolivia and was carrying the team to Medellin in Colombia for the 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals. It had declared an emergency at 10 pm local time due to a reported electrical failure before crashing. (AP photo)

Brussels bombings

Bombs struck the Brussels airport and one of the city's metro stations on March 22, killing at least 32 people and injuring dozens. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks. The bombings were the deadliest ever act of terrorism on Belgium soil. (AFP photo)

Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew was a tropical cyclone which originated in the Caribbean Sea in December and caused mass devastation in the Haiti, United States of America, Cuba, Dominic Republic and parts of South America. Nice attack

On July 14, 2016, a large white truck drove into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in the southern French city of Nice. The driver of the truck also opened fire before being shot dead by the police. The attack killed 84 people and wounded several hundreds. The perpetrator was identified as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a 31-year-old Tunisian man. In the days that followed, Islamic State took responsibility for the attack, referring to Bouhlel as a "soldier" of the group without naming him. (Reuters photo)
