Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The Army’s military intelligence (MI) at the Southern Command in a joint operation with the Ahmednagar police have arrested a person on charge of duping at least 10 people on the pretext of getting them recruited in the Indian Armed Forces.
Preliminary probe has showed that the accused recently collected Rs 2 lakh each from candidates hailing from Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Ahmednagar in Maharashtra.
The accused targeted and duped even family members of the ex-servicemen, the probe showed.
The action was carried out late on Tuesday, following which an FIR against the accused, Ajay Bisht, was registered at the Camp police station in Bhingar. According to police, the accused was arrested from the Ahmednagar-based market area, where he was moving around looking for gullible people to cheat.
In a statement, the Army authorities stated, “On specific inputs of MI, Southern Command Intelligence Battalion, Pune, on Tuesday, the Bhingar police station, Ahmednagar, arrested Bisht, who has been found involved in a fraudulent recruitment racket for Army and civil employment of defence for clerk and tradesman.”
The statement stated Bisht would even lure dependents of Army personnel and civil candidates by claiming acquaintance with some senior Army officers in charge of enrolling candidates for Army and defence civil employees’ vacancies.
Police said Bisht also conducted dummy medical examination tests for the candidates at a of hospital in Ahmednagar district in a bid to continue cheating the gullible candidates desperate to bag employment with the Indian Army.
The Ahmednagar police, led by superintendent Rakesh Ola, said the probe was under way to ascertain if the accused was actually in touch with anyone from within the armed forces, or if he was just using his knowledge about the armed forces to dupe gullible youths.
