Man beaten to death by girlfriend’s family in Lakhimpur Kheri

Bareilly: A 22-year-old man who had gone to meet his girlfriend was thrashed to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred in Mirzapur village under the jurisdiction of Neemgaon police station, said police.
Victim Nagesh Kumar and the girl hailed from the same village and wanted to get married to each other.Despite belonging to the same community, the girl’s family allegedly opposed their relationship.
The victim’s family alleged that their son was abducted and assaulted by the girl’s family due to their disapproval of his relationship with their daughter. Both families are said to be relatives.
According to police, Nagesh was purportedly called by the girl around 5 am to meet outside her house when he was caught by the family, who subjected them both to severe thrashing. After receiving a distress call, the Dial 112 team reached the spot and rescued the couple. While the man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, the girl is currently undergoing treatment, said circle officer (CO) Shamsher Bahadur Singh.
He added, “We received information early morninng that Nagesh Kumar had visited a girl in the neighbourhood and was subsequently assaulted by her father, uncle, and brother. The suspects are currently on the run, but our efforts to locate them are ongoing. An FIR has been filed under relevant sections of the IPC including 304 (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The statement of the girl will be recorded once her condition is stable.”
Notably, several similar cases have been reported from the region in the recent past. On Jan 2 in Budaun, a man hacked his daughter and her boyfriend after witnessing them together. In Sept 2023, a pregnant woman succumbed to severe burns five days after her mother and brother almost decapitated her and set her on fire. Another case in point is that of Govind Kumar, 23, who was beaten to death by his girlfriend’s relatives in Agra on Sept 19 while visiting her.
In August, a 17-year-old girl was fatally shot by her father, who disapproved of her relationship with a local in Kheri’s Fardhan. On July 26, a 26-year-old man, who eloped with a woman and married her, was beaten to death by his in-laws in the same district. On July 11, a 16-year-old girl was found murdered at home, with police suspecting involvement from her family members.
