CHENNAI: At least nine deemed universities eight in TN and Puducherry and one in Jharkhand have converted their MBBS seats under the NRI quota into general category seats. This means that students from across India can opt for these seats at nearly half the cost.
There has been an over all increase of 526 MBBS seats in deemed universities to 9,887 in 2023, yet the number of NRI seats have come down in the seat matrix this year.
Many colleges have either shunned or reduced NRI quota.
Experts say more universities are likely to convert NRI seats in first or second round of counselling as they are likely to remain vacant.
Chennai-based Saveetha Medical College and Hospital, SRM and Chettinad Medical College and Research Institute; Sri Lakshmi Institute of Medical Sciences in Puducherry have announced that they will not offer NRI seats for undergraduate medical course. Vels Medical College has brought down the number of NRI seats to just 10.
