ERODE: A wild elephant trampled two men to death near Kadambur in Sathyamangalam tiger reserve (STR) in Tamil Nadu's Erode district on Sunday.
The incident took place when the duo was heading to a hamlet from their native hamlet on their bike through the STR.
The deceased have been identified as S Bomme Gouder, 56 of Peria Kundri and his friend M Sitthu Mari, 60, of Chinna Kundri.
Of them, Bomme Gouder was survived by his wife and five children while the latter was a bachelor. Both were farmers.
On Sunday, the duo went to Makkampalayam - another neighbouring hamlet in STR to invite their friends and relatives to the Pasuveswarar temple festival in Kundri village.
When they neared Makkampalayam hamlet on their bike, a wild elephant suddenly came in the opposite direction. The duo started to run leaving the bike on the road.
"However, the elephant managed to trample them," a forester from Kadambur forest range said. He also said that the duo succumbed to their grave injuries on the spot.
The local villagers who witnessed the incident alerted the forest officials. They rushed to the spot and chased the elephant from the spot. They also sent the bodies to the government hospital in Sathyamangalam for post-mortem.
A case was registered and further inquiry is on.
