Guwahati: Assam Police has provided financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the family of Dhanmani Deka, the forest home guard who tragically lost his life in a tiger attack while patrolling at Orang National Park late on Wednesday.
“In deep sorrow, we mourn the loss of late Dhanmani Deka, forest home guard of Darrang, who bravely gave his life on duty, in a tiger attack.
As a gesture of support, Rs 2 lakhs were handed over as immediate relief to the bereaving family,” Assam police said in a post on its X handle on Saturday.
Assam DGP GP Singh on X said, “We stand together with our brothers and sisters of @assamforest.”
Dhanmani Deka was attacked by royal Bengal tiger in the Bilpar forest camp under the Silbori range of the park on Wednesday evening. The tiger dragged the guard’s body for around three kilometres from the site where the incident took place.
A senior official of the park told TOI, “The park spans over 279 square kilometres after 200 square kilometres were added in May this year. Previously, the park had a strength of 100 staff members, including range officers, DFO and administrative staff, of which 41 posts were already lying vacant. After adding the area, the park requires at least 200 staff members to ensure the safety of both guards and wildlife in the park.”
