Guwahati: Around 828 sq km of Assam’s land is currently under encroachment by neighbouring states — Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram — minister for border area protection and development Atul Bora said in the assembly on Wednesday.
Replying to a question raised by AIUDF’s Aminul Islam (senior), the minister said over 161 sq km of Assam’s land is under the occupation of Arunachal Pradesh, approximately 595 sq km encroached upon by Nagaland, 34.4 sq km by Meghalaya, and 36.7 sq km by Mizoram.
The minister said several steps have been taken in the past three years to strengthen border security. These measures include the deployment of commandos in Lakhimpur district, the establishment of eight border posts in Cachar district, and the creation of border outposts (BOPs) in West Karbi Anglong, Sivasagar, Hailakandi, and Dima Hasao.
Bora further informed the assembly that the govt has allocated financial assistance to the BOP management committees for infrastructure improvements in the fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24.
In another question by MLA Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah regarding encroachment by Nagaland, the minister said a case concerning the border dispute between Assam and Nagaland is currently being heard in the Supreme Court, and talks between the two states are ongoing at various levels. He also said a total of 145 people have lost their lives due to the Assam-Nagaland border dispute since 1979.
