Cole Road to be renamed after slain BJP leader
Dibrugarh: Cole Road, a prominent street in Dibrugarh town, is set to be renamed as ‘Jayanta Dutta Path’, in memory of slain BJP leader Jayanta Dutta who was gunned down by suspected Ulfa militants on May 1, 2001. The rechristening event, scheduled on Thursday, will be presided over by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Dutta, who was a former BJP state general secretary and the party’s candidate from Dibrugarh in the 2001 assembly election, was attacked and killed, along with the then Dibrugarh district BJP secretary and another party worker, by suspected Ulfa militants as they were entering his election office in Dibrugarh, after campaigning on the evening of May 1, 2001.

The brutal assault left nine others injured. Shortly after the assault, the suspected militants targeted an Asom Gana Parishad office in Dibrugarh, killing an activist, a policeman and another individual.
On Sunday, Dibrugarh district commissioner Bikram Kairi, superintendent of police Rakesh Reddy, Mayor Saikat Patra and Dibrugarh district BJP president Ujjal Kashyap visited Cole Road to take stock of the arrangements.
