Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (
IMD) has cautioned about the possibility of isolated heavy
rainfall over northeast India from Aug 31 to Sept 4. The forecast also warns of an increased risk of flooding, waterlogging, and potential damage to infrastructure in the affected areas, particularly in Guwahati.
This rainfall is expected to alleviate the
monsoon deficit observed in most of the northeastern states.
Authorities have urged people to evacuate high-risk regions to prevent landslides and adhere to safety measures.
Over the next four days, the northeastern region is expected to experience heavy rain due to monsoon activity. Furthermore, a cyclonic circulation over central Assam, extending up to 1.5 km above sea level, is anticipated to intensify rainfall activities.
On Saturday, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration released a statement cautioning residents about the high probability of heavy rainfall in Guwahati city within the next 24 hours. “During this period, that is, until 8:30 am tomorrow (Sunday), various parts of the city may receive 7-11 cm of rain,” IMD said.
The statement emphasized that this warning is a joint effort by the IMD and the Guwahati-based Regional Meteorological Centre. It also cautions about the possibility of flooding on roads and waterlogging in several areas of the Dispur and Sonapur revenue circles, which may lead to transportation disruptions and damage to sensitive infrastructure.
The IMD forecast stated for eastern and NE India, “fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall very likely.
