Kanpur: Chief judicial magistrate, Kanpur Nagar, Suraj Mishra, granted a 10-day police custody remand of a former president of the Kanpur Press Club, on Tuesday. The accused, Avanish Dixit, was arrested in connection with a nazul land dispute case on Wednesday morning. According to joint director of prosecution, Kunwar Vikram Singh, this was the first instance in which a court in Kanpur had granted a 10-day police custody remand and imposed certain conditions.

The court also directed the police to refrain from using coercive methods against the accused. If the accused’s counsel wishes to be present during the remand period, they may do so, albeit at an appropriate distance, said the court. tnn
