Kochi: Bharata Mata College (BMC) celebrated
Onam with enthusiasm and grandeur, inviting senior citizens from Thrikkakara to join the festivities. The event, held on Saturday, saw more than 50 elderly residents participating in various games and cultural activities, which formed a crucial part of the celebrations on the college campus.
The celebration was organized by Bharata Mata Extension For Organic, Research and Environment (BeFORE), an outreach programme of BMC, in collaboration with Vayomitram initiative of Thrikkakara municipality.
The event provided a platform for the elderly to interact with their peers.
Maria Das, 76, expressed the joy in participating in the celebration. "I saw an 84-year-old individual dancing today, and I also met many new persons. This made me happy, and I am thankful to the organizers," said Das. Arya Chandran, one of the coordinators BeFORE, said, "The college has been undertaking initiatives for the elderly by allowing them to engage with students and utilize the resources of the college as part of lifelong learning".
Municipality chairperson Radhamani Pillai, who inaugurated the celebrations, said that the local body is committed to organize events that could accommodate the elderly community of the region. The event was presided over by college Principal Lizzy Kachappilly.
