Madurai: An old building, estimated to be several decades old, collapsed on Sunday morning near West Masi Street in Madurai city. No one was injured as the building and the street were empty at the time.
The building, located on Sudam Samiyar Lane near the junction of West Masi and East Masi Streets, belonged to a sweet shop owner named
Muthukumar. It was being used as a godown and occasionally for making sweets.
With the city experiencing rainfall over the past week, the structure suddenly collapsed. A two-wheeler parked on the street was damaged, but no injuries were reported.
Following the collapse, the owner began demolishing the remaining structure and clearing the debris with an excavator. The Madurai Corporation has recently intensified efforts to address the issue of structurally unsound buildings within the city and has directed officials across all five zones to take legal action against owners of buildings that have received demolition notices due to structural weaknesses.
