Dindigul: Kodaikanal deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Madhumathi on Sunday said that police have seized as much as 300gm of magic mushrooms this year alone as its sale is banned under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. She warned tourists against procuring it illegally from dealers in Kodaikanal.
At a press meet on Sunday, the DSP said that a total of eight magic mushroom cases and eight ganja cases have been booked under Kodaikanal police station limits so far this year.
“We have seized nearly 300 gm of magic mushrooms and around 3kg of ganja. We also arrested 52 people this year while 40 were arrested in previous cases. Further, we are taking police action against those who post content of use of magic mushrooms or ganja on social media platforms like Instagram. The owner of the social media account will be held responsible,” she said.
Last week, Kodaikanal police, along with a team of revenue officials, sealed three cottages, including an ashram for use of magic mushrooms. Police conducted vehicle checks and raids of private lodges at various spots over the past two days as well.
During the drive, they arrested six people for peddling magic mushrooms, and 10 tourists from other states who came to buy it. “We are also coordinating with the forest department to identify places where magic mushrooms are being plucked. Anyone in possession of magic mushrooms or its sale or buying it will be considered as criminals,” added Madhumathi. TNN
