Madurai: Residents of Sellur held a
protest on Monday, demanding urgent repairs to the underground drainage (UGD) system. The residents complained that sewage water has been leaking in the area for the past two weeks. In another part of Madurai, Villapuram residents held a protest and roadblock demanding repair of roads that were damaged in recent rains.
In Sellur, around 50 residents gathered near Sivan Street, protesting against the poor UGD system.
The residents reported that sewage water has been leaking in their area for the past two weeks, causing sanitation issues. Despite multiple complaints to the Madurai corporation, no action had been taken.
M Dhanalakshmi, a resident of 3rd Cross Street in Sival Kovil Theru, said, “We have been complaining for two weeks, but no one from the corporation came to address the issue. Only after we protested did the officials come to inspect the problem.”
Meanwhile, in Villapuram, residents expressed concern about the poor condition of roads in their area. Around 50 people blocked Villupuram Main Road, seeking action after the recent rains left many interior roads slushy and non-commutable. P Rajan, a resident, said, “The main road to the airport is well-maintained, but all the other roads are damaged. Corporation officials have been ignoring our complaints, so we had no choice but to protest. Now, we hope they will carry out the necessary patchwork.”
Police intervened to pacify the protesters. Corporation officials promised that the problems would be sorted soon.
